Can you resist the siren song of your thumb? Maybe you nibble at it with your teeth when no one’s looking, or maybe you stare into the eyes of the person across the table from you while the nail on your middle finger digs and digs at the weak spot in your thumb’s cuticle, until you can feel the flesh split and the cuticle side rise up, pull back, and give way to wetness below. Oops, that’s blood. You’re now bleeding beneath the desk and wondering if you still have a tissue in your jacket pocket that you could grab to “blow your nose” while you carefully wrap the tissue around your bloody thumb like a bandage so the person talking to you won’t notice you’ve mutilated yourself during your conversation. Because that would be highly awkward! For you both!
